Located within the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Lemay Township, the Veterans Canteen Retail and Cafe serves as a convenient oasis for both outpatient visitors and guests at the facility. This unique establishment goes beyond the call of duty by offering not only a retail space stocked with essential goods but also a cozy café atmosphere where comfort food meets camaraderie.

The café prides itself on an array of food options that cater to various tastes, making it a go-to spot for a quick bite. While the menu certainly satisfies the hunger pangs of patrons, customer feedback suggests there’s always room for expansion. For instance, diners like Donna Schottel have mentioned the good food quality paired with a desire for more variety in their soup offerings. Yet, this desire highlights the commitment of the staff to enhance the dining experience further, striving to meet the needs of those serving or visiting our veterans.

One of the standout features of the Veterans Canteen is the friendliness of the staff, as highlighted in multiple reviews. Randy Myklebust succinctly sums it up: “It’s clean and the people are very nice.” Such praise feels significant in a healthcare setting, where a warm smile and approachable service can make all the difference in one’s day. The dedicated team here is always eager to assist, ensuring every visit feels personal and welcoming.

In terms of retail, the canteen sports a collection that ranges from snacks to clothing and electronics, as noted by customer Jeffrey Stephens. The well-curated selection at reasonable prices means you can grab a quick treat while waiting for an appointment or pick up those essential items without venturing far. Occasionally, like in Kevin “Scotsman” McCollom's experience, some specific items may be out of stock, which nudges the canteen toward improving inventory based on customer needs.

The Veterans Canteen Retail and Cafe clearly holds a special place within the Lemay Township community, embodying a spirit of service not only through its offerings but also through its commitment to welcoming veterans and their families. Whether you're there to grab a refreshing drink, a cheap and comforting meal, or simply to enjoy a relaxed environment, you're met with friendly faces ready to help. This is more than just a cafe or retail outlet; it’s a supportive space for those who have served our country.

There is a really good selection of things to purchase in the store there. From snacks to clothing, to electronics, to counter-top appliances. The prices are reasonable and it is very convenient, whether you are an out-patient at the JBVA or a visitor. The people working there are friendly and helpful.

I was looking for some Spray And Wash clothing stain removal. The Veterans Canteen Retail Store had a shelf space for Shout clothing stain removal but nothing on the shelf or in the back shelves and nothing on order in the near future.

The food is good, but I wish they had more of a variety of soup to choose from. Also, they have hot chocolate at the registers. Could they possibly carry the sugar-free kind? It would help with ones that have diabetes. Thanks so much for taking care of the veterans.

Skip the ice box and go straight to the food prep areas. Any of them. They are all good. Though I missed the fish last Friday

It's the VA. What else can be said. Clothes are expensive but very good quality. Food is ggovermental... Employees are full rude and indifferent. Just like your wonderful Uncle Sammy

The salad is good with the awesome service. It's very nice to volunteering this place for the cafeteria job.

Handy for getting sodas and snacks when I have a Doctor's appointment. Sometimes they have good sales but not enough items that are advertised.
